Our philosophy here at Kidovations Educational Experience stands with the idea that every child is different. We are a childcare center in Georgia that believes that this difference is not only in terms of their background but also in the way they learn and absorb new information. Most parents think of preschool as a four-walled institution that inundates information to their children directly from the book. Though this might be true for most schools, it is in the way this information is presented that could make or break your child’s learning. This is the reason why it is essential to determine early on which learning style your child prefers.
But first, what is learning style? And how does it affect your child’s development?
Learning style is defined by Professor Neil Fleming as an individual’s preferential way in which he or she absorbs, processes, and comprehends information. In his VARK Model (1995), he proposed four different learning styles – Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic. Here’s an overview:
- Visual Learners
The term “show not tell” perfectly describes how this learning style operates. These are the people who learn and understand concepts better through images, maps, or graphic organizers. Most people prefer this learning style. Flashing interesting pictures, for example, is a great way to engage an audience, most especially children.
- Auditory Learners
These are individuals that could digest information better through listening. This could be through music or speech, and any other auditory tools for learning. For instance, they can imagine scenarios better if it’s in an Audiobook format than when they’re just reading it on their own.
- Read and Write Learners
This is a learning style that falls within the traditional methods of teaching. For learners with this preferential style, reading and writing facilitate better engagement as well as retention. The most common example of this is the copious note-taker who never misses a beat from the teacher and those who also like to read.
- Kinesthetic Learners
These are people who understand lessons better when moving around is involved, either through their hands or their entire bodies. Most preschools subscribe to this method of teaching and for kids; it has been proven to be an effective means of engaging them. They’re not only having fun while learning but also getting exercise for a healthier well-being.
Which learning style does your child have? By understanding the different learning styles, you can now easily determine which style your child prefers and use it to his or her advantage. Again, every child is different and we, at Kidovations, specialize in the kind of child care in Statesboro Georgia that embraces these differences. We also believe that the best way of learning lies in a healthy mix of all these learning styles. Our teaching methods prioritize the incorporation of all these learning styles to maximize your child’s learning potential.
